BJ Penn Calls Out Nick Diaz

Former UFC lightweight/welterweight champion BJ Penn surprised many MMA fans, when he lashed out at title contender Nick Diaz via Tweeter.

“@nickdiaz209 Look how much bigger you are in this pic,” Penn tweeted. “I thought you were gonna scrap from the beginning homie? What was that coward fence holding strategy to tire out the smaller man? Street fighter my ass! I made you fight like glass jaw @jonfitchdotnet poser! I’ll be ready for that weak bs next time we fight!”

Penn announced his retirement from MMA shortly after his UFC 137 bout against Diaz, but his tweet makes it clear he still wants to step inside the Octagon. Diaz turned out to be the better fighter at UFC 137, dominating the second and third rounds of the fight.

Penn did take the first round of the bout, establishing himself as the better boxer. Unfortunately for BJ, his cardio failed him once again (something that has happened too many times in his MMA career), and he wasn’t able to keep up with Diaz in the later rounds.

If Penn had the cardio to go three rounds, the outcome of his UFC 137 encounter against Nick Diaz would probably have been different.

I’m definitely not buying the excuse that Diaz’s clinch work was what tired Penn out, as he would have gassed out regardless of his opponents strategy.

A rematch between the two certainly has potential, given the fact the first one turned out to be quite entertaining. Regardless of the outcome of their UFC 137 fight, if Penn shows up in shape for a rematch, he’s definitely good enough to defeat Diaz.

Penn will have to wait a while though, if he truly wants a rematch against Nick. Diaz is currently scheduled to face Carlos Condit at UFC 143 for the interim welterweight title, and the winner of that contest will have to face current champion Georges St. Pierre later on in the year.
