UFC 131 results

UFC 131 was not as exciting as some MMA fans had hoped, but it still provided a decent night of entertainment for true fans of the sport. Here are the results for UFC 131, held on June 11 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

Junior dos Santos defeats Shane Carwin

Junior proved to the MMA world that he’s ready for a shot at the UFC heavyweight title with his impressive performance over Carwin. Both MMA fighters felt each other out in the opening round of the fight, until a right cross by Junior sent Carwin to the ground. The barrage of punches that followed was enough to end the fight, but Carwin managed to survive the relentless assault. The next two rounds would be all Junior as he cruised on to a unanimous decision and earned himself a date with Cain Velasquez.

Kenny Florian defeats Diego Nunes

Florian’s debut in the featherweight division turned out well for the veteran MMA fighter despite a rough first round. After being knocked down in the first round, Kenny started breaking down Nunes in the second with his notorious elbows, opening a cut on his opponent. Kenny continued to wear out Nunes in the third round, earning himself the unanimous decision.

Mark Munoz defeats Damian Maia

Munoz’ stock as an MMA fighter rose drastically with his win over Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist Damian Maia at UFC 131. Maia came out looking more like a kick boxer, chasing Munoz around the Octagon with kicks and punches. Munoz came back in the second round, taking Maia to the ground and pounding him out. Both MMA fighters looked good in the third. Munoz took Maia to the ground but was caught in the crucifix position shortly after. Maia looked really close to securing a choke, but was unable to finish. Personally I scored the final round evenly, and felt the MMA fight was a draw (round one 10-9 Maia, round two 10-9 Munoz, round three 9-9). Officially the judges gave the MMA fight to Munoz, who earns his first win against a top contender.

Dave Herman defeats Jon Olav Einemo

Both MMA fighters slugged it out in this all out brawl, until a knee from Herman sent Einemo to the ground in the second round. Herman continued with a barrage of punches, finishing Einemo off on the ground.

Donald Cerrone defeats Vagner Rocha

Easy victory for Cerrone was able to keep the fight standing to the disadvantage of the BJJ specialist Rocha. The judges scored the MMA fight 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26 all for Cerrone.

Sam Stout defeats Yves Edwards (KO, round two)

Chris Weidman defeats Jesse Bongfeldt (guillotine choke, round one)

Krzysztof Soszynski defeats Mike Massenzio (unanimous decision)

Nick Ring defeats James Head (rear-naked-choke, round three)

Dustin Poirier defeats Jason Young (unanimous decision)

Joey Beltran defeats Aaron Rosa (TKO, round three)

Darren Elkins defeats Michihiro Omigawa (unanimous decision)
