UFC 179 Predictions

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 25 for the UFC 179 fight card. A title rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes will headline the event, while light-heavyweight contenders Phil Davis and Glover Teixeira will trade blows during the co-main.

Here are my UFC 179 Predictions:

José Aldo vs. Chad Mendes

Aldo (24-1-0, 14 KOs) only needed a second under a round to finish Mendes (16-1-0, 6 KOs) during their last encounter. However, the fact the Brazilian clearly avoided a takedown by grabbing on to the cage left a bad taste in the Team Alpha Male disciple and his fans’ mouths.

Mendes has been on a tear since then, racking up five consecutive wins, but the same can be said about Aldo who has successfully defended the UFC featherweight title three times since, including a win against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.

Chad Mendes is certainly a live underdog heading into his UFC 179 rematch with Jose Aldo, but, despite “Money’s” improvements, the matchup still favors the Brazilian on paper. Aldo has the more diverse striking arsenal and he is more than capable of keeping the fight where he wants it without any assistance from the cage.

Watching fellow Brazilian Renan Barão lose his bantamweight title to Mendes’ campmate T. J. Dillashaw has likely given Aldo some extra motivation, and I expect him to be at his very best come fight time. It should be a very competitive fight, but, at the end of the day, I expect Aldo to eventually take control of the fight and deliver a spectacular finish, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Prediction: Aldo wins via KO.

Glover Teixeira vs. Phil Davis

Teixeira (22-3-0, 13 KOs) and Davis (12-2-0, 4 submissions) will try to bounce back from recent losses when they square up at UFC 179. Light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones dominated Glover for 25 minutes during his last outing, while Anthony “Rumble” Johnson used Davis as a stepping stone to establish himself as a serious contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s light heavyweight division during his last bout.

Glover is the more seasoned striker, but, unlike Rumble, he’ll likely have a hard time keeping Davis off him. Teixeira will have the luxury of home Octagon advantage, but this is Davis’ fight to lose if he follows a smart game plan as he did during his fight against Lyoto Machida.

Prediction: Davis wins via decision.
