UFC Fight Night 53 Predictions

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on Oct. 4 for the UFC Fight Night 53 card. Welterweights Gunnar Nelson and Rick Story will headline the event, while Max Holloway will try to extend his current streak to four wins when he takes on Akira Corassani in the co-main event.

Here are my UFC Fight Night 53 predictions:

Gunnar Nelson vs. Rick Story

Story (17-8-0, 4 KOs) looked good during his last outing, putting Leonardo Mafra away with an arm triangle during the second round of their encounter. He’ll be looking to add Nelson (13-0-1, 9 submissions) to his list of victims when the two square off at UFC Fight Night 53. Nelson got off to a slow start during his last outing against Zak Cummings, but he turned things around during the second round, bringing the contest to an end via rear-naked choke.

Story should have an advantage in the striking department, and Nelson will likely be in over his head if he’s unable to put the UFC veteran on his back. However, the chances of that happening are pretty slim. Nelson is an elite grappler, and that is something Story has struggled with at times.

Nelson should be able to survive a few rough moments during the fight and eventually put Story on his back.

Prediction: Nelson wins via submission.

Akira Corassani vs. Max Holloway

Holloway (10-3-0, 4 KOs) is one of the more promising prospects in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s featherweight division, and he’s been pretty impressive since his UFC debut, losing only to some of the very best fighters in the division.

Akira (12-4-0, 3 submissions) won his first three fights in the promotion, but he ran into trouble during his last outing against Dustin Poirier, losing via TKO.

Akira has the striking credentials to make this an entertaining fight, but Holloway is a significantly better fighter in my opinion. I expect him to add another impressive victory to his resume come fight time.

Prediction: Holloway wins via TKO.
